The New Hampshire Department of Justice announced on Thursday that the juvenile, whose name has not been disclosed, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of falsifying physical evidence.
Kassandra Sweeney, 25, was the mother of two sons, Benjamin, 4, and his younger brother Mason, who was about to turn 2 later in August. Their bodies were discovered by officers who arrived at 56 Wethersfield Drive in Northfield, N.H. just after 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 3.
A statement from the New Hampshire Department of Justice on Thursday said that the suspect will be tried as a juvenile under state law. The death of each person was from a single fatal gunshot wound. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jennie V. Duval conducted autopsies and concluded the manner of death was homicide.
Information regarding the motive for the killings and the connection of the alleged perpetrator to the victims was not released by police or state prosecutors.
“The charges and allegations against the juvenile are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty,” the DOJ statement concluded.
An obituary for Sweeney’s family said that “everyone that knew Kass knew she was born to be a wife and mother.”
“Family was the center of Kass’s world. She spent every available moment making family memories whether it was with her husband and sons, at her parents’ house, with her sister, or with extended family,” the obituary states.
Kassandra Sweeney is survived by her husband Sean Sweeney. He expressed his feelings in a Facebook post on Sunday after the tragic event.
“I wanted to thank everyone for the outreach and support, while things will never be ‘normal’ again my body finally shut down and let me get some sleep last night and I woke up feeling as ‘normal’ as possible,” he wrote. The deceased members of his family “will be forever loved and missed.”
Attorney General John Formella assured the public that everyone involved in the shooting has been identified and poses no threat to other potential victims.
The triple funeral for the family members took place on Aug. 13. A GoFundMe fundraiser for memorial costs and living expenses raised over $50,000.
